Straight Street

Purpose:

As a result of our 8-year comprehensive/planning-implementation approach, it has been determined that the best approach to violence is to reach children earlier in life through their peers, and to be objective in our peer-teaching approach. With the previous statement as a backdrop, we have, through board membership and volunteerism, fostered a lasting relationship with the City of Charleston's Police Department, its head law enforcement representative, Reuben Greenburg; it's "Weed & Seed" officers and administrator are an intricate part of our approach to the Enterprise Community, through "Midnight" Basketball.

Will offer an effective moral and ethical after school alternative to "minority over representation" and for the prevention of juvenile delinquency; and to promote and support an effective moral and ethical alternative to public education of at-risk young people, 3rd-9th grades, and to aid in the re-establishment of family values within the inner-city of Charleston, South Carolina.

AmeriCare Early Childhood Enhancement and Development Project

The AmeriCareEarly Childhood Enhancement and Development Project is committed the belief that the integration of child development, family involvement and community building services is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Our philosophy is ecological in scope: children must be viewed as part of a family system and the family system must be seen within the context of their community. We believe the power and spirit to create change comes directly from the families and their communities. Our job is to facilitate that process of change by brokering and advocating for a comprehensive, integrated approach to improving the entire family's education, health and employment opportunities.

The opportunity to operate a Early Childhood Enhancement and Development Project in Charleston would represent a culmination of Innovative Alternative for Education, Inc.'s efforts to weave together a cohesive fabric of early health intervention and early childhood education, addressing the needs of the whole family, in a community based setting. Innovative Alternative for Education, Inc.'s goals and philosophy closely reflect in design, and implementation those of the Early Childhood Enhancement and Development Project.

Innovative Alternative for Education, Inc.'s (IAE) approach will be based on a combination home/center-based model that builds on the best of two worlds - - working with families at home and also offering service and activities in a family resource center. It uses a dual approach with the Project "Restore" for Women Project Coordinator providing both home-based and center-based services. The Project "Restore" for Women Project Coordinator in coordination with the Early Childhood Enhancement and Development Project Executive Director and Health Coordinator will share responsibilities for implementing an array of services more conveniently accessed in an inviting center-based environment (e.g., peer support groups, literacy, job readiness, training, health, counseling, etc.). The plan will call for intense coordination among all the staff to provide a holistic approach to families'needs. Most activities and services, ranging from nutritional services to educational development, will be offered jointly in the home and in the center.

IAE, Inc.'s plan will also capitalizes to a great extent on all ready established community resources. For example, many of the core services families will receive will be provided by existing agencies with the IAE brokering those services and removing barriers such as day care, and transportation to allow full utilization of services, a key IAE objective. A representative of key social service agencies will serve as an Interagency Coordinator who will provide additional support to the to the Project "Restore" for Women Project Coordinator

Community Forum

Will bring National speakers into the Enterprise Renewal Community's, Lowcountry Houses of Faith, Colleges, the Public School System and in any organzational setting where young people are in great numbers to deliver messages of hope and encoragement.

The aforementioned speakers will motivate, encourage and instill hope in Lowcountry young people, while entertaining, motivating and enlightening this audience with practical communication, personal and social interactive skills

An example:

Jackie Kaminer's Focus Workshops, Inc. will impress upon the participants the importance of staying focused on the task at hand in the classroom, on the basketball court, on the athletic field or at the office. The message of this participatory workshop is that despite distractions, we can all improve upon our ability to remain "in the moment.

Jack Kaminer has a long history in the field of education. He has taught on the elementary, secondary and college level. He has held positions as a Health and Physical Educatior, Assistant Principal and College Professor. Jack was a Head Basketball Coach for thirty two years on both the high school and college level. His teams won numerous championships and on fourteen occasions he was named "Coach of the Year". In 1998, Jack was inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame (New York).

United Students Against Violence (USAV)

United Students Against Violence (USAV) will augment the existing school system and its peer tutorial approach to educate in school and the drop-out expulsion population; will reduce the incidences of violence in elementary and middle school-age young people; and provide training (educational & skills) which will enhance the marketability of a community which exceeds the state's negative unemployment and incarceration rate.

Vision Theater

Our comprehensive educational program is designed to provide educators with arts resources that will aid them in the classroom and enhance their students' regular curriculum.

Visions Theater places emphasis on the unified family. Committed to providing quality, thought provoking, issues oriented "street" theater that families can enjoy together, our productions are designed to encourage as well as entertain. They reflect an ongoing belief that exposure to the arts at an early age sets a child's entire life.

Our goal is, by 2005, Visions Theater Children's Theatre will be the premier inner-city family theater in Charleston, South Carolina. Since 2002, our mission has been to provide exceptional, professional theater experiences for young people and their families, plus we serve as an arts-in-education resource for area educators. This will earn Visions Theater a reputation for artistic excellence and a tremendous audience following.

Essentially, Visions Theater is about "issues-oriented" professional theater that speaks to the unique perspective of young people and their everyday challenges. But, Visions Theater is also about expanding those perspectives necessary to allow children an opportunity to explore and discuss meaningful issues that will allow for positive future interaction with all socio-economic classes within the Lowcountry of South Carolina and beyond.
Facts For Families

As we grow, we want your experience at Visions Theater to be one that you can share even after your family has left the performance. That is why we will offer engaging activities and discussion questions that you can enjoy together as family-activities that will make each play in our season more meaningful. Also, in the future (to be announced) be sure to check out our Suggested Reading section at the end of each page located in our monthly activity booklet. This activity will offer books by some of the authors featured in our season, as well as books with similar themes found in our season of plays.

VISIONS THEATER ACADEMY (LEADERSHIP SCHOOL/DAYCAMP)

Visions Theater Academy (Leadership School/DayCamp) teaches Life Skills through Stage Skills. Since 1996, hundred of young people have become a part of the Leadership family. Our students learn skills that will help them on stage: presence, expression, focus, projection and spontaneity. But, more important, they develop skills that will help them in life: self-confidence, discipline, integrity, commitment and teamwork.

ABOUT VISIONS THEATER ACADEMY (LEADERSHIP SCHOOL/DAYCAMP)

Visions Theater Academy (Leadership School/DayCamp) teaches Life Skills through Stage Skills. Since 1996, hundreds of young people have become a part of the Academy family. Our students learn skills that will help them on stage: presence, expression, focus, projection and spontaneity. But, more important, they develop skills that will help them in life: self-confidence, discipline, integrity, commitment and teamwork. Our teachers are some of the best and most sought-after professional actors in Charleston, South Carolina. They are also people who care deeply about children, who encourage students to express themselves fully.

Visions Theater Academy (Leadership School/DayCamp) program includes the intensive Summer Theater for grades 3-7 at the Agape Ministries of Charleston Multi-purpose Center and the College of Charleston. In addition we offer School Enhancement Classes on Saturdays during the fall, through Arthur Gilliard Entertainment and G.E.M., Inc.

Teen Theater Programs

Like peer education programs, teen theater programs involve two groups that are affected by the program, the actors or players, and the audience.

Again, you should definitely examine the effects of the program on the actors - it is with this group that you are most likely to find meaningful effects. For example, test whether their knowledge and attitudes have changed since they began participating in the theater group.

You should also assess the effects of the program on the audience, particularly because they are a "captive" group. You might ask them to complete a quick pre-test before the performance starts, and a post-test and feedback form after the performance. Incentives such as key-chains with the theater group logo could be distributed to audience members who complete the evaluation tools.

Remember to ask the audience questions that will indicate whether or not knowledge and/or an attitude change has occurred, not simply whether or not they enjoyed the performance.

If the audience is one that you can contact again, you might ask them to tell you how many people they spoke with about the performance, as well as with whom they spoke. If they spoke with their parents, kids, or partner it's a good indication that the program may have helped to increase family communication about sexuality issues.

A discussion after the presentation can serve as an informal evaluation. Did participants "get it?" Did they raise thoughtful questions about the issues covered in the presentation? A tally sheet developed for use in tracking how many questions or comments made about each scene or vignette.
