The major purpose for instituting the Charleston InnerCity "Midnight"
Basketball Association was as a constructive alternative to violent criminal
activities, addressing issues of economic and social deprivation, low
commitment to schools, academic failure, low neighborhood attachment,
community disorganization as well as providing and illegal substance dependency.
Our primary reason for instituting "Midnight" on the inner-city
of Charleston's Eastside was to provide year-round, wholesome recreation
and afterschool alternatives for at-risk young people, ages 5-16 The Charleston InnerCity "Midnight" Basketball Tournament began August 23, 1991, as a result of an anonymous eastside resident's desire to participate in meaningful recreational activity in Mall Park. The tournament is a vehicle which presented a viable alternative to an otherwise troubled neighborhood. Our primary reason for instituting "Midnight" Basketball on
the inner-city of Charleston's Eastside was to provide wholesome recreation
for 350 at-risk young people, ages 5-16. It is a constructive alternative
to violent criminal activities, addressing issues of economic and social
deprivation, low commitment to schools, academic failure, low neighborhood
attachment, community disorganization as well as providing and illegal
substance dependency. This countywide activity provides young people an
opportunity to make positive choices and directly meets how "We become
a conduit to the Enterprise Renewal Community through children, youth
and families." To date this approach has benefited more 7,000 at-risk
young Year 'Round Clinic (ages 5-10) August 31 - June 31 Academics & Athletics The "YearRound" Basketball Clinic will offer programs e.g. basketball, football and spelling bee's designed to augment the existing elementary school system's academic pursuits; to teach individuals how to improve the quality of their own and others health, and offers experiences designed to promote quality health habits and knowledge and lastly during their impressionable years, to illustrate for students how to make positive choices as they relate to athletics and academics. Primary purposes are:
Students interested in "YearRound" will have a strong focus
on courses in the (prerequisites) e.g. sciences, such as biology, anatomy,
chemistry, physics, mathematics and computers. Last Thought: This approach to academics and athletics will cause the
choices made in later years (middle and high school) to be interpreted
as tools for a successful transition into adulthood.
